About Eric Burger

Eric Burger has more than 25 years of senior executive experience in industry and more than 10 years in academia, including close to four years as a senior official in the federal government, spanning Republican and Democratic administrations.

He brings industry, academic, and federal experience to my students, research, and corporations that he advises. 

He’s worked at, founded, and turned around companies of all sizes, from seven-person private companies; starting top-tier venture companies; being the officer of a top-tier private equity company; to being the CTO of NASDAQ-listed and NYSE-listed companies. 

He spent more than 10 years as Research Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University, returning full-time from his time as Assistant Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and prior to that, his role as Chief Technology Officer of the Federal Communications Commission.

Eric is a Distinguished Member of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery); a Senior Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers); Senior Member, National Academy of Inventors; and a Life Member of AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association). 

Currently, he is Research Director of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative and a Research Professor of NextG Security at Virginia Tech. He’s also a Technology, Management, Intellectual Property and Policy Consultant, and hold a private pilots license.

He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, an MBA in International Business Management from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and an SBEE in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
