April 29, 2011 Carl Dietrich (M.S. '92, Ph.D. '00) has been promoted to associate research professor. Dietrich is an expert in wireless technology and works closely with ECE's Jeffrey Reed and Tamal Bose in the Wireless@VT research group.
He has served as a special research faculty member since completing his dissertation, first as a research associate from 20002002 and then as a research assistant professor. His Ph.D. was on "Adaptive Arrays and Diversity Antenna Configurations for Handheld Wireless Communication Terminals," and he has expanded his research to include wireless distributed computing, software-defined radio (SDR), multi-antenna systems, and radio wave propagation.
Dietrich has contributed to sponsored research projects with a total funding of approximately $3.5 million. He has served as the principal investigator for two projects, a co-principal investigator for five projects, the project manager for three projects, and as senior personnel or major contributor for six projects.
Dietrich has also been a significant contributor to ECE's OSSIE (Open Source SCA Implementation: Embedded) project. He worked on the original $1 million NSF proposal that funded the project in 2005. OSSIE, a tool for software-defined radios, has been downloaded more than 15,000 times, received more than 35 citations in journal and conference papers and presentations, and been used in M.S. theses at both Virginia Tech and other institutions.
