ECE 4374 - Power System Protection Laboratory (1C)

Course Description

Experimental verification of principles and practice of protective relaying. Experiments and design projects to demonstrate the principles and techniques of industrial power system design. Fuses, time overcurrent and instantaneous relays. Differential relaying for transformers. Distance relaying. Current and Voltage transformers.

Why take this course?

This course provides experimental and project oriented verification of principles of industrial system design and power system protection. The laboratory experience will be invaluable to a student who intends to make power engineering his professional career. The course will complement the work done in the parallel course ECE 4354 that deals with the theory of power system protection.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply measurement techniques associated with power system transient phenomena
  • evaluate the influence of transients on protective systems
  • evaluate the operation of protective devices
  • develop experimental techniques for setting and testing relays
  • develop the skills to report experimental findings in written reports.
