Extended Campus and Distance Programs

Online Graduate Education

ECE offers masters programs through several extended-campus programs:

  • Masters of Engineering – greater Washington, D.C., metro area
  • Greater Washington, D.C., metro area
  • Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program
  • MIT online program
  • Onsite, corporate programs, including Dahlgren, Hampton Roads, and Lockheed-Martin.

Ph.D. programs are also offered in the National Capital Region, VT-MENA, and Dahlgren.

Non-degree programs are offered through the Commonwealth Campus and MIT graduate certificate programs.

Extended-campus students follow the same admissions procedures and minimum requirements as on-campus students.

Master's of Engineering – greater Washington, D.C., metro area

The ECE graduate program offers Masters of Engineering (MEng) degrees in Computer Engineering (CPE) and Electrical Engineering (EE) in the greater Washington, D.C. Region. These professionally oriented degrees offer graduate students a strong academic foundation in core ECE technological areas with a culminating, project-based learning experience.

Greater Washington, D.C., metro area

The largest extended-campus master's degree program serves engineers in the nation's capital region, and is located at the Northern Virginia Center (NVC) at Falls Church and the Advanced Research Institute (ARI). ECE facilities include classrooms, laboratories and a library. Evening classes are offered in ECE each semester, in a combination of:

  • On-site offerings
  • Live 2-way video offerings from our Blacksburg campus
  • Online classes

The ECE department has faculty members stationed in The National Capital Region and conducts a growing Ph.D. program.

Other Virginia Locations

Cardinal Education (Formerly Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program) 

About a third of the extended-campus masters degree students study at 13 other extended-campus sites, through the Cardinal Education program. The Cardinal Education program offers qualified students the opportunity to earn an MSEE or an MSCPE through televised classes from five universities in Virginia. Classes are delivered live, by two-way video, in the late afternoon and evening.

Commonwealth Campus Program

Non-degree students may take classes through the Commonwealth Campus program.

Online Graduate Education

ECE offers a number of online courses as part of our degree programs. We also offer an exclusively online program leading to graduate certificates or a Masters of Information Technology (MIT) Degree. The MIT program offers ECE modules in communications, networking and computer engineering. Other components of the interdisciplinary program are software development, business information systems, and decision support systems. The MIT program is also available on-site at the National Capital Region campus. For more information, visit the MIT web site.
