The Formation of the HLB Society

The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is named after Harry Lynde Bradley, a pioneer in the electric motor control industry. In 1987, Mrs. Marion Bradley Via established a $5 million endowment for the enhancement of the ECE Department and in honor of Mr. Via’s late father, Harry Lynde Bradley.

In 2021, as a nod to our department namesake, the Heta Lambda Beta Society was formed.  It recognizes successful completion of degree requirements by ECE graduates as well as individuals that contribute to the success of the Electrical and Computer Engineering program.  At the end of each semester, we conduct an induction ceremony for all of our graduating seniors and graduate students to welcome them into the society.  New inductees will receive a certificate documenting their membership along with a commemorative medal that graduates can wear to graduation.

The Oath of the Engineer

During the ceremony, all inductees take the Oath of the Engineer demonstrating their commitment to the profession.

" I am an Engineer. In my profession, I take deep pride. To it, I owe solemn obligations.

As an Engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect; and to uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of my profession, conscious always that skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth's precious wealth.

As an Engineer, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good. In the perfomance of duty and in fidelity to my profession, I shall give my utmost. "
