Meet Your ECE Graduate Student Ambassador: Abdul Raheem Shaik
Q&A with Abdul
Tell us where you are from and what you are studying at Virginia Tech.
I am an international student from India, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering, specializing in Machine Learning and Software Intelligence.
What you enjoy most about being a Virginia Tech student?
The faculty and program at Virigina Tech are very welcoming and helpful. I transitioned into Computer Engineering with a Mechanical Engineering background so naturally I was very worried when entering the program. However, the program is designed to help students like me adjust and excel in the course. The faculty helps build foundational knowledge in courses to ensure all students can succeed.
The international community is also strong and always willing to help new students adjust to this new lifestyle.
What advice would you give current and upcoming ECE graduate students?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. There are numerous resources for students to help them succeed as graduate students as well as many members of the community who would be glad to help. It is also good to get familiar with other students, incoming or existing, and conversing with them. People from different cultures have different approaches to tackling/solving problems and engaging in conversations with diverse perspectives can broaden your own understanding and problem-solving skills.
