Saifur Rahman

Saifur Rahman, the Joseph Loring Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Advanced Research Institute, has been listed by Greentech Media as one of the top 100 people in smart grid research.

Founded in 2007, Greentech Media specializes in information and research on developments in clean energy. Greentech Media provides online news and published reports, and hosts events relating to green energy. One of the firm's regular reports focuses on energy and power markets, and another focuses on thin-film solar technologies.

According to the article, Rahman "has dedicated his professional life to researching cutting-edge energy technologies, including energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy and microgram and distributed generation and storage." He founded Virginia Tech's Advanced Research Institute (ARI) and directs the Center for Energy and the Global Environment.

Among his other achievements, Rahman was awarded the 2011 IEEE-USA Professional Achievement Award for helping create the Technologies for Carbon Management Initiative. He is also principal investigator for a $1.25 million contract from the Department of Energy (DOE) to create and manage a public Smart Grid Information Clearinghouse web portal.

Rahman is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, and has authored more than 400 journal and conference papers.
