Yizheng Zhu

August 27, 2012 — Yizheng Zhu has joined the ECE faculty as an assistant professor. He comes to Virginia Tech from Duke University, where he was a research scientist in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

While at Duke, Zhu developed biomedical devices using fiber-optic technology. He has designed quantitative optical microscopy techniques with high sensitivity, novel fiber-optic interferometers for studying depth-resolved one- and two-dimensional light scattering, and a clinical endoscopic system based on angle-resolved low coherence interferometry.

He has participated in two clinical trials relating to his biomedical research. One trial tested his clinical endoscopic system design for detection of dysplasia in Barrett's Esophagus and included helping an industrial partner with commercialization of the system. In another trial he studied light scattering signatures of resected colon tissue for the identification of intestinal dysplasia.

Zhu has written more than 40 journal and conference papers and three book chapters. He holds two patents and has applied for three more. Zhu has been a reviewer for 15 different journals and has reviewed grants for the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

Zhu earned his B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1998 and 2000, respectively, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2007.
