Qiang Li

August 27, 2012 — Qiang Li has joined the ECE faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor. Li has been working as a research assistant professor at Virginia Tech's Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES).

One of Li's current research projects involves developing a proof-of-concept power supply on a chip using gallium nitride devices operating between 2 and 10 megahertz. His goal is to create a power supply with a power density greater than 1000 W per cubic inch and 88 percent efficiency. His current model has a power density 10 times greater than similar industry products.

His research interests involve many aspects of power electronics, including high-density electronics packaging and integration, high-frequency magnetic components, high-frequency power conversion, distributed power systems, and renewable energy.

Li won two outstanding presentation awards from the Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition in 2010. He has co-authored 16 publications with ECE's Fred Lee, and served as the general chair of the 2010 Center for Power Electronics Annual Conference in 2010.

Li earned his B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University in China in 2003 and 2006, respectively, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2011.
